![]() Mrs Christie makes an improbable tale very real, and keeps her readers enthralled and guessing to the end. Need it be said – the little grey cells solve once more the seemingly insoluble. ![]() Several fans, in fact, have followed in Christie’s footsteps, double-checking her descriptions. In writing the story, she painstakingly noted the details of the carriages clues such as the position of door handles would prove vital to Poirot’s investigation. ![]() As for the setting, Christie had long professed a love of the Orient Express, finally achieving her dream of travelling on it in 1928 with her first solo trip abroad. The underlying plot of the story was one Agatha Christie pulled from the headlines at the time, the abduction of Charles Lindbergh’s son, a traumatic real-life mystery involving murder and extortion that had yet to be solved when Murder on the Orient Express was published. It's an intricate mystery revolving around a group of characters cut off from the world where Poirot exhibits not only the power of his little grey cells but his concern and compassion for humanity. ![]() ![]() A group of passengers trapped on the Orient Express in a snow storm with a murdered body and a Belgian detective to keep them company: Murder on the Orient Express is one of Agatha Christie’s most famous stories. ![]()

Through it all, he paints a devastating portrait of what it means to be a soldier and a human being. ![]() Across time, he seeks parallels in the histories of others who have gone to war, especially his taciturn grandfather (World War II), father (Cold War), and uncle (Vietnam). Free of self-indulgence or self-glorification, his account combines recollection with the imagination's efforts to make reality comprehensible. In this breathtaking memoir, award-winning poet Brian Turner retraces his war experience - pre-deployment to combat zone, homecoming to aftermath. Now he lies awake each night beside his sleeping wife, imagining himself as a drone aircraft, hovering over the terrains of Bosnia and Vietnam, Iraq and Northern Ireland, the killing fields of Cambodia and the death camps of Europe. In 2003, Sergeant Brian Turner crossed the line of departure with a convoy of soldiers headed into the Iraqi desert. ![]() ![]() ![]() For Georgia, this means coming full circle to recognize what she has overlooked and realize the extent of her present happiness and talents. ![]() "We all take a path we thought we wanted to take, and then we find out there are other paths we can still explore," one of Georgia’s long-lost former lovers tells her toward the end of the novel. ![]() For Georgia, the trip will be "a long, meditative prayer” that “will help me not to worry about the end of my life but encourage me.” But the world is not always respectful of our dreams and Georgia’s children and business partner-not to mention new and old loves-crash-land in her life with turmoil and drama of their own, forcing Georgia’s best laid plans to go awry. Rising through the ranks of his regiment and gradually becoming its most famous and decorated member, Murdoch also comes to see that much more than courage under fire will be needed to live his life as a soldier, and a man. Seeing battle for the first time against the Boers, Murdoch quickly and painfully learns that the British Army will need to find new ways of fighting modern wars, as the fear of a major European conflict grows ever stronger. ![]() In their ranks is the young subaltern Murdoch Mackinder, the latest in the long line of Mackinders who have, in their time, commanded the Royal Westerns across the whole of the British Empire. ![]() ![]() The Boer War is brewing in South Africa, and the Royal Western Dragoon Guards are bound for the front line. ![]() ![]() ![]() Diana Rigg and Sylvia Miles are perfectly for their roles as bitchy, bitter, vanity bourgeois women. Speaking of its cast, I adore Maggie Smth, I am thoroughly enjoy her a touch over-the-top performance here, also Jane Birkin is magnificently multi-faceted (I couldn't recall her roll in MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS though). Also it has been the third time around, so as that I am lucidly familiar with its plot design-pattern, the obvious target is farcically recognizable and the murderer is not so perplexing to guess, in addition that all the cartoonish characters attenuate the tone of the headlining murder, which I will recommend to those who usually are shunned by the murder/crime genre. ![]() ![]() The distinction of a star-studded cast and an isolated milieu is too overt to be surprising, luckily enough the island itself compensates a mind-distracting delightfulness. I have watched another two notoriously famous works of Agatha Christie, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (1974) and DEATH ON THE NILE (1978), despite of three in a row, I could still enjoy this one to a great extent. ![]() |
